Immigration

Immigration is a long process if done legally, you will find out how strong the relationship is,
how strong a bond between that you never knew existed and well worth it in the end.
First you can check on what visa you want and what applies to your situation, I called an immigration lawyer in Chicago, talked with him about it, and was recomended to get married and file for visa at Bangkok Embassy, ok good I thought, I had a good plan of action read all I could on USCIS web sties downloaded all the forms, and gathered all the documents needed.
While talking with the lawyer he recomended that I file on my own as I had a "good handle on the process" his exact words, but if I needed some help he would be there to do it for me at $1500.00 dollars, after talking with my wife she said we can do it ourselves and if we do not success then use a lawyer, I agreed.

We arrived at the U.S Embassy, I filled out an affidavit that I was a legal U.S. Citizen and free to marry, they noterized them we paid the fee, then went to a really good translation agency my wife found driving around the night before, had them translated into Thai.
After we married went back to translation agency, had all the marriage documents translated into english and stamped at the Ministry Of Foreign Affairs, as they are now legal documents.
We went back to the Embassy to file and was told I could not unless I had lived there for a period of one year and/or had a job for a period of six months. We were advised that Department of Homeland Security could approve us to do this and sent us to DHS I remember it was tower two, when we reached the office we had a wait time of about 1/2 hour, we were called to the little window explained our situation and told no we could not file there, and gave us the K-3 packet and said it will take six months...

When I got back to the U.S. I filled out all the forms, my wife filled out the parts in Thai that needed to be and signed before I left.
I sent off the I-130 packet to Nebraska Service Center only to find out they were backlogged and transfered my packet to California Service Center, they were extremely fast and it turned out for the best.
The approval came then CSC sent packet to National Visa Center.
We have filled out many forms paid many fees and are still waiting, some of it takes time as you have to send the forms to your spouse for signature, after NVC completes the case they will send packet to the Embassy, they will mail out more forms and set an interview date.

I will be glad to answer any immigration questions you may have.

We had to do the same thing with my wife when we got married. It really wasn't a hassle though. We were lucky enough to get married before 9-11 and all the rules got screwed around.

I did notice though before 9/11 it took longer for the CR-1/IR-1 but only about 3-4 months for a K-3.
Now K-3s are at a snail pace, so we went with the CR-1 and will not have to adjust status. I am hoping only about another 4 months as the Embassy is 2-3 months for interview.
